Episode Transcript
Hi! John Morgan here and welcome to this week’s episode of the Keep Growing Podcast where we take a look at the gardening week ahead for the Mid-Ohio Valley. This week we’re covering week 34 of 2024, Saturday August 17th to Saturday, August 24th.
Up first, the weather. Finally, we’re looking at a wet weekend and a cool down into the 70s. Yes. The 70s! That’s downright chilly weather. Then we’re looking at warmer and dryer weather heading into the end of the week.
Monday this week is the full moon. Traditionally, the full moon is the perfect time for root crops. According to the WVU Extension gardening calendar, now is the perfect time to sow fall turnips. You can plant them in rows in your garden, but I personally like to use them as a bit of a cover crop. You can till up your garden, scatter the seeds, and they’ll form a living blanket of foliage to help smother out weed growth. Then in October and November, you’ll get delicious turnips.
At home I’m busy getting my landscape ready for fall. Now is the perfect time to start cleaning out landscape beds, refreshing mulch, and planning fall plantings. It’s the time to start thinking about pansies and violas, mums, and ornamental cabbage and kale. Personally, I’m planning beautiful blankets of pansies. They are a great choice that can survive the cold of winter and give you an early pop of color in March.
When it comes to choosing pansy colors, they are the only flower that offers literally every color. Some people like to go all-in with fall colors. Personally, I like to choose something that will work for both seasons, and then bring in the fall color with mums and decorations. That way they don’t look out of place blooming in the spring. This year I’m thinking about purples and blues. Those of you that know me will know why.
Until next week, use this cooler weather to get some work done in the garden, do some planning for fall, and, of course, keep growing.
