Quick Tips for Poinsettia Care

Poinsettias are a popular plant during the holiday season, known for their bright red and green leaves. While they are often used as decorations, they can also be kept indoors as houseplants. Here are some tips for caring for poinsettias indoors:

1.       Choose a location with indirect sunlight. Poinsettias prefer bright, indirect light and will thrive in a spot near a south- or east-facing window. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, as this can cause the leaves to fade and the plant to become leggy.

2.       Keep the soil moist. Poinsettias like to have moist soil, but be careful not to overwater them. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry, and be sure to empty any excess water from the drainage tray or decorative foil to prevent root rot.

3.       Provide the right temperature. Poinsettias prefer temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid placing them near drafts or cold windows, as this can cause the leaves to drop.

4.       Fertilize sparingly. Poinsettias do not need a lot of fertilizer, and over-fertilizing can cause the plant to become leggy and produce fewer leaves. Use a balanced fertilizer once a month, diluting it to half the recommended strength.

5.       Prune the plant regularly. Poinsettias can become leggy and lose their compact shape if they are not pruned regularly. Prune the plant back in early spring, cutting the stems back to about 6 inches from the soil level.

By following these tips, you can keep your poinsettia looking beautiful and healthy throughout the holiday season and beyond. Merry Christmas!
