Episode Transcript
Hi! John Morgan here with the Keep Growing Podcast where we take a look at the gardening week ahead for the mid-Ohio Valley. This week we’re covering week 31 of 2024, Saturday, July 27th to Saturday, August 3rd. Up first, let’s take a look at the weather forecast.
We’re looking at a toasty weekend in the 90s. Then stormy weather heading into next week. It’s going to feel like a sauna with pop up storms on Monday and then more widespread thunderstorms, some heavy, Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. We’ll stay hot and muggy into next weekend with more stormy weather on the horizon. On the upside this will hopefully help to alleviate the ongoing drought conditions.
In the garden this week, it’s time to start looking at getting some of the last late crops in the ground. A few years ago, I made the mistake of planting snow peas too late in the season. I had beautiful blooms, but they got taken out by a hard freeze before they bore fruit. Now is getting into the danger zone for planting fall peas. A good rule of thumb I’ve found is to look at the average first frost date, around October 20th in our region, and then calculate backwards based on the crop time on the seed pack with some extra days for a buffer. Snow peas average about 60 days which is pretty much all of August and September.
Right now is the time to also plant fall cabbage and kale. They are a bit more forgiving when it comes to frosts and freezes. I also recommend investing is some row covers if you really want to start pushing the boundaries of the growing season.
This morning as this episode is going up, I’m heading to the Antique Tractor Show and Parade at the WV State Farm Museum. Look for a video about it in coming weeks on Bob’s LIVE. That’s right. Bob’s LIVE, our weekly live show is returning in August. Since June I have been collecting video for some very interesting segments.
Also, with the kick off of the Olympics in Paris, I thought we would have an Olympics of our own. Right now on Facebook, we have head to head match ups. The plant with the most likes for each match in a round will move on to the next round until a winner is crowned.
Head over to Facebook, like your favorite plants, and, until next time, Keep Growing.
